So What Cha Want - Beastie Boys - The Record Company cover - Click to download.
LA based, The Record Company, does their bluesy rendition/tribute of So What Cha Want in honor of Adam Yauch’s (MCA) recent passing. It’s a horrible tragedy that the universe has taken this musician from us. But his life and life’s work are now being celebrated. It’s sad that it takes one’s passing to realize what a true talent and amazing person we had. Heaven just got one more great talent… RIP MCA 1964-2012
by Robert Glasper ft Erykah Badu
Robert Glasper is a musical genius. No denying that. This Houston native grew up listening to the sounds of his mother singing jazz and blues in clubs and churches. Glasper says that he first developed his sounds accompanying his mother at church gigs. As a jazz pianist and producer, he’s backed/produced some of my favorite artists doing it - J Dilla, Mos Def(Yasiin Bey), Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, etc… This guy is the truth.
Cop his new album Black Radio on iTunes.

I get submissions to the blog emailed to me daily but this one caught my ear and eyes. The Record Company are an LA based band that self-describe their music as “raw blues inspired by 60’s Muddy Waters and Lee Hooker”. When you press play, you’ll get it. The old timey sounding twang is bad ass. It’s Black Keys vs Robert Johnson. Raw and unpolished music can be great or terrible, this is actually pretty darn good. Enjoy a few tracks.
